A quiet Miami morning shattered for one resident, jolted awake not by an alarm, but by an intruder. The encounter quickly spiraled into a terrifying ordeal, far beyond a simple break-in.
The victim reported being awakened to a man directly on top of him, a disturbing violation unfolding in the darkness. According to a police report, the intruder began to assault him, groping through his clothing.
The situation escalated with shocking brutality. The man then exposed himself and proceeded to urinate on the victim before abruptly fleeing the apartment, leaving behind a scene of unimaginable distress.
Adding to the unsettling nature of the attack, the intruder reportedly uttered the chilling words, “I know you,” before snatching some clothing and disappearing into the pre-dawn hours. The victim, understandably shaken, immediately contacted authorities.
Police quickly focused their investigation on nearby residents, and soon identified a suspect: Maykel Rodridguez, a 34-year-old U.S. Air Force veteran living just blocks from the victim’s home.
The victim was able to positively identify Rodridguez as his attacker. During questioning, however, Rodridguez remained completely silent, refusing to offer any explanation or answer any questions posed by investigators.
Rodridguez was initially arrested on charges of burglary, battery, and indecent exposure. However, the severity of the crime prompted prosecutors to seek a more serious charge.
During a court appearance, the prosecutor argued the facts were “pretty egregious,” detailing the horrifying nature of the home invasion and assault. They requested Rodridguez be held without bond.
The defense countered, emphasizing Rodridguez’s five years of service in the U.S. Air Force and requesting his release on bond. The judge, however, disagreed.
Judge Tanya Brinkley found probable cause to upgrade the charges to burglary with assault or battery, suggesting a deeper, more complex story lay beneath the surface. This upgraded charge carries the potential for a life sentence if Rodridguez is convicted.
