A New Year’s Eve celebration in the Swiss Alps descended into unimaginable horror as an explosion and fire tore through a crowded bar, claiming the lives of approximately 40 people and injuring 115 others. The tragedy unfolded at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, transforming a night of revelry into a scene of chaos and devastation.
Authorities are painstakingly working to identify the victims and inform their families, a process expected to take considerable time given the scale of the disaster. The initial explosion occurred around 1:30 a.m. local time, with over 100 people trapped inside the popular bar as flames rapidly engulfed the building.
“This evening should have been a moment of celebration and coming together, but it turned into a nightmare,” stated Mathias Reynard, head of the regional government of the Valais Canton, reflecting the collective shock and grief. The local hospital was quickly overwhelmed, its intensive care unit and operating theatre reaching full capacity as a surge of injured individuals arrived.
Helicopters and ambulances raced to the scene, providing critical assistance to the wounded, many of whom were international visitors. While the cause of the explosion remains under investigation, authorities have ruled out an act of terrorism, focusing instead on potential accidental ignition sources.
A 16-year-old Parisian survivor, Axel Clavier, described the scene as “total chaos,” still reeling from the trauma. He recounted the loss of a friend and the uncertainty surrounding the fate of others, witnessing waitresses delivering Champagne bottles adorned with sparklers shortly before the blaze erupted.
Clavier’s desperate escape involved hiding behind a table, then attempting to break a Plexiglas window with a table to find safety. He managed to escape, losing all his belongings in the frantic flight, but clinging to the profound relief of being alive. “I am still alive and it’s just stuff,” he stated, a testament to the harrowing ordeal.
Witness accounts paint a terrifying picture of how the fire began. Two women reported seeing a bartender lifting a colleague on his shoulders while she held a lit sparkler inside a Champagne bottle, the flames quickly spreading to the wooden ceiling. This seemingly innocuous act quickly spiraled into a catastrophic event.
Panic seized the crowd as people desperately sought escape, with one witness describing a dangerous surge towards a narrow staircase and exit in the basement nightclub. Others smashed windows in a desperate attempt to flee the inferno, while frantic parents rushed to the scene, fearing for their children’s safety.
Fire officials believe the blaze likely triggered the release of combustible gases, leading to a violent ignition and a phenomenon known as a flashover – a near-instantaneous engulfment of the space in flames. The resort town of Crans-Montana, nestled high in the Alps, is renowned for its stunning scenery and world-class skiing, now forever marked by this tragic event.
The picturesque town, situated between the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc, is a popular destination for European tourists. This New Year’s Eve, however, will be remembered not for celebration, but for the devastating loss of life and the enduring scars of a night turned to tragedy.
