Seven Canadians were injured in train collision near Machu Picchu: foreign affairs minister

A shadow fell over the ancient wonder of Machu Picchu this Tuesday as a train collision sent shockwaves through the region, leaving a trail of injuries and one tragic loss of life.

Seven Canadian citizens were among the approximately thirty passengers hurt in the accident, a jarring event unfolding near the famed archeological site in Peru. Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand swiftly confirmed the news, detailing that officials are actively providing consular support to those impacted.

The collision involved two tourist trains, both carrying visitors eager to explore the historical sanctuary. Authorities have identified the deceased as a railroad worker, a somber reminder of the human cost of the incident.

One of the two trains affected after a head-on collision connecting Machu Picchu with Ollantaytambo is pictured in Pampacahua, Cusco Department, Peru, on Dec. 30, 2025.

Immediate action was taken following the crash, with railway services along the crucial line connecting Machu Picchu and the city of Cuzco suspended indefinitely. The focus now rests on ensuring the well-being of the injured and a thorough investigation into the cause of the collision.

Beyond the immediate response, expressions of solidarity are being extended to the people of Peru. Canada, through its Foreign Affairs Minister, has conveyed its deepest sympathies to all those affected by this devastating event.
