A New Year’s celebration in the Swiss Alps transformed into a nightmare as a devastating fire ripped through the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, claiming at least 40 lives and injuring nearly 120 others. The tragedy unfolded amidst revelers welcoming the new year at the popular ski resort.

Investigators now believe the blaze was ignited by sparklers attached to champagne bottles, brought dangerously close to the bar’s ceiling. Analysis of video footage and interviews with witnesses have led authorities to this preliminary conclusion, painting a picture of a festive atmosphere turned deadly in moments.

The injured represent a diverse range of nationalities, with the majority being Swiss, followed by French and Italian citizens. Many of those wounded were young, their lives just beginning, adding a heartbreaking dimension to the disaster.

Sixteen-year-old Axel Clavier, from Paris, recounted a terrifying struggle for survival, describing a suffocating inferno where moments before he’d been celebrating with friends. He forced open a window with a table to escape, but the joy of the new year was tragically overshadowed by the loss of a friend.

The scene outside the bar quickly became one of desperate grief and frantic searching. Candles and flowers formed a makeshift memorial, while hundreds sought solace in prayer at the nearby Church of Montana-Station. Families clung to hope, desperately seeking news of loved ones.

Pope Leo expressed his condolences, sending a telegram to the bishop of Sion, praying for the souls of the deceased and strength for those suffering. Online, a digital vigil emerged, with an Instagram account filled with photos of the missing, as friends and relatives pleaded for any information.

Witnesses described a terrifying sequence of events, recalling waitresses carrying champagne bottles adorned with lit sparklers. Some reported seeing a bartender lifting a colleague on his shoulders while she held a lit candle within a bottle, a moment that may have irrevocably altered the course of the evening.

Panic erupted as flames spread, collapsing the wooden ceiling and triggering a desperate surge towards the exits. People smashed windows to escape, many sustaining severe injuries, while frantic parents raced to the scene, fearing the worst for their children.

Gianni Campolo, a 19-year-old on vacation, arrived to help first responders and described a scene of unimaginable horror – people trapped and severely burned. “I have seen horror,” he stated, “and I don’t know what else would be worse than this.”

The intensity of the fire has made identification incredibly difficult, compounding the anguish for families now providing DNA samples. In many cases, personal belongings, including identification, were reduced to ash, hindering the process of bringing closure.

Among those missing is Emanuele Galeppini, a 17-year-old Italian golfer with a promising future. While officially listed as missing, the Italian Golf Federation has sadly announced his death, leaving his family awaiting confirmation through DNA analysis.

Crans-Montana, nestled in the heart of the Alps, is renowned as a premier ski destination, attracting tourists from across Europe. The resort town, a regular stop on the World Cup circuit and home to a prestigious golf club, now mourns a tragedy that has shaken its idyllic image.
