New Year’s Eve took a dangerous turn on the Queen Elizabeth Way when reports flooded in about a pickup truck careening along on just three wheels, showering sparks onto the highway.
The Ontario Provincial Police received multiple calls starting around 11:20 p.m., describing the vehicle heading Toronto-bound near Welland Avenue in St. Catharines. Witnesses painted a harrowing picture of a truck barely holding itself together.
Officers intercepted the truck near Bartlett Avenue in Grimsby and arrested the driver, a 47-year-old man from Hamilton. He allegedly blew more than twice the legal limit for alcohol, revealing a shocking disregard for public safety.
A photograph released by police showed the interior of the truck littered with empty Busch beer cans, a stark visual of the circumstances surrounding the incident. The driver’s troubles didn’t end there; investigators discovered his license had been suspended since 2001.
He now faces a series of serious charges, including impaired operation, dangerous driving, and driving while suspended. The incident serves as a chilling reminder of the risks associated with impaired driving.
Meanwhile, in Vaughan, a brazen carjacking unfolded in the early hours of Friday morning, leaving authorities searching for two suspects. The incident began with a deliberately staged collision.
Around 12:40 a.m., an Acura MDX was rear-ended by a dark-colored SUV near Hilda Avenue and Pinewood Drive. When the victim exited her vehicle to assess the damage, a suspect seized the opportunity and jumped behind the wheel, speeding away alongside the other SUV.
York Regional Police are currently seeking information about the suspects and the vehicles involved, but have not yet released any descriptions. Investigators are appealing to the public for any potential witnesses or security footage.
The new year also brought a violent incident to Oshawa, where a stabbing at a rooming house sent one man to the hospital. Police responded to an armed person call on January 1st, around 7:30 p.m., at a residence near Ritson Road North and Adelaide Avenue East.
Investigators allege that a resident of the rooming house assaulted and stabbed another tenant. The victim was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, though his condition is not life-threatening.
Nnamdi Enunwa, 38, of Oshawa, was arrested at the scene and charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing a crime. He awaits a bail hearing.
Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding the Oshawa stabbing to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.
