CALEDON AUTO THEFT CRISIS: Police Hunt Rampant Criminals!

CALEDON AUTO THEFT CRISIS: Police Hunt Rampant Criminals!

The new year began with a flurry of activity for Caledon OPP, as officers responded to a series of concerning incidents on the roads and beyond. One early morning encounter involved a driver who narrowly avoided a collision with a police cruiser, a stark reminder of the dangers of impaired driving.

Just after 1:20 a.m. on Thursday, an officer on Highway 50 in Bolton was forced to quickly maneuver to avoid a vehicle pulling from a private lot. The driver, a 33-year-old from Caledon, failed a roadside breath test and now faces charges including impaired operation and careless driving. His license was immediately suspended for 90 days, and his vehicle impounded.

The end of the year also saw a young driver facing multiple charges after a traffic stop on Highway 410. Montel Opoku, 20, of Cambridge, was found to be in violation of a release order and driving contrary to the restrictions of his novice license. Cannabis was also discovered within reach, adding to the list of offenses.

A swift response to a reported incident near King Street and Airport Road led to the recovery of a stolen vehicle and the arrest of two suspects. Officers quickly established a perimeter and apprehended the individuals fleeing the scene, uncovering a vehicle with a significant value.

Kuldeep Singh Bhangu, 27, of Brampton, faces serious charges including driving while prohibited and possession of stolen property exceeding $5,000, alongside drug and assault-related offenses. Onkar Kalia, 36, of Toronto, is charged with possession of break-in tools and stolen property.

Christmas Day itself wasn’t immune to these incidents. Officers responded to a collision on Hesp Drive, arresting James Nesbitt, 32, of Caledon, who was charged with impaired driving, failing to remain at the scene, and driving without insurance.

Later that same day, another collision on Horseshoe Hill Road led to the arrest of Ksenia Nemeth, 43, of Mississauga, who refused to provide a breath sample. The holiday period continued to yield arrests for impaired driving, highlighting the persistent risk.

On December 29th, two separate reports of possible impaired drivers led to further arrests. Riliwan Bolaji Tijani, 34, of Shelburne, and Jamellah Jennah Ahmed, 25, of Scarborough, both face charges related to blood drug concentration levels exceeding the legal limit. Both drivers lost their licenses and had their vehicles impounded.

These incidents, occurring within a short timeframe, underscore the ongoing commitment of Caledon OPP to road safety and the enforcement of driving laws. The cases serve as a potent warning about the consequences of impaired and unlawful driving behavior.

Beyond traffic incidents, police are also investigating a concerning trend of extortion cases reported in Caledon and Dufferin County, with 45 cases documented since 2023. This separate investigation highlights the broader range of criminal activity requiring police attention in the region.
