FORD'S DYNASTY CRACKING? Liberals Surge in Shocking GTA Uprising!

A recent poll reveals a shifting landscape in Ontario politics, despite the Progressive Conservatives currently holding a comfortable lead. While Doug Ford’s party would win an election held today, their support is demonstrably softening, particularly within the crucial Greater Toronto Area.

The poll indicates 44% of decided voters would currently choose the PCs, but this represents a narrowing advantage of just nine percentage points over the Liberal party, who stand at 35%. The New Democratic Party trails at 16%, with the Green Party garnering a modest 3%.

Interestingly, the Liberals currently lead the PCs in both the 905 and 416 regions of the GTA. In the 905, they hold a 44% to 38% advantage, while in the 416, the lead expands to 45% against the PCs’ 40%. This is a significant development, hinting at potential momentum for the Liberals even without a permanent leader in place.

Ontario premier-elect Doug Ford prepares to give his acceptance speech at the Toronto Congress Centre after he won another PC majority on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025.

PC support remains strongest in eastern, southwestern, and south-central Ontario, where they command a substantial majority of the vote. However, northern Ontario presents a different picture, with the Liberals edging ahead at 40% support compared to the PCs’ 30%.

Analysts are cautious about interpreting the GTA numbers as a definitive shift, emphasizing the need for consistent results in subsequent polls. The 905 region, in particular, has historically been a PC stronghold, making the current Liberal lead a potentially dramatic turnaround.

Adding to the political complexities is the ongoing debate surrounding the proposed Hwy. 401 tunnel. The ambitious project, intended to alleviate congestion across the GTA, is facing considerable public opposition.

Announced in 2024, the tunnel would stretch from Mississauga eastward, potentially reaching Markham. Premier Ford framed the project as a necessary response to rapid growth, arguing that commuters waste an average of 98 hours annually stuck in traffic.

However, the poll reveals that 45% of Ontarians oppose the tunnel, while only 28% support it. A feasibility study, awarded to WSP Canada Inc. in November for $9.1 million, is currently underway, but public skepticism remains high.

The public appears to prioritize alternative solutions to congestion. A clear majority – 33% – believe the province should focus on improving public transit in the GTA. Further investment in local roads (20%), highway widening (19%), and new highway construction (12%) also garnered more support than the tunnel project, which was only a top priority for 6% of respondents.

The poll, conducted between December 5th and 7th with a sample of 1,000 Ontarians, carries a margin of error of ±3.09%. It paints a picture of a dynamic political climate, where voter sentiment is shifting and ambitious infrastructure projects are facing scrutiny.
