The frigid waters off Withernsea became a scene of desperate struggle as a young girl was swept away by unforgiving waves. The incident unfolded rapidly, transforming an afternoon into a harrowing fight for survival.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene near the Pier Towers, where a fifteen-year-old girl ventured down concrete steps and was immediately overwhelmed by the turbulent sea. Rough conditions quickly pulled her under, triggering a frantic response from those nearby.
A staff member from the Castle Cafe acted instantly, throwing a life ring towards the struggling girl. For a heart-stopping moment, she grasped the ring, but a powerful wave ripped it from her grasp, pulling her beneath the surface once more.
The girl’s parents, without hesitation, rushed into the water to help, joined by four local men who bravely attempted a rescue. Their efforts, however, were met with the relentless force of the sea.
Karen Higgs, a bystander, recounted the agonizing moments, describing how the girl appeared to be pulled further out with each crashing wave. Despite desperate shouts urging her to grab the safety ring, she seemed unable to react.
As darkness descended, a massive search and rescue operation was launched. A helicopter scanned the turbulent waters, joined by air ambulances, RNLI lifeboats from Withernsea and Bridlington, coastguard rescue teams, and firefighters.
The conditions were treacherous, with waves reaching three meters in height. Earlier in the day, Hornsea Inshore Rescue had been unable to launch their lifeboat due to the “horrendous” conditions, a testament to the sea’s fury.
The search continued into Saturday morning, focusing on locating a third person involved in the tragedy. Authorities have requested that the public avoid the area to allow emergency services to continue their work unimpeded.
While the circumstances are not considered suspicious, the events have left a community reeling, a stark reminder of the power and unpredictability of the ocean.
