RAJO LAUREL REBORN: Fashion's Phoenix RISES!

RAJO LAUREL REBORN: Fashion's Phoenix RISES!

January is proving to be a remarkable month for designer Rajo Laurel, as he prepares to represent the Philippines on an international stage – an artistic presentation in Thailand on January 30th.

This presentation, titled “Malikhaing Pinoy: Lahi” (Creative Filipino: Race), is the result of a powerful partnership between Thailand’s Creative Economy Agency and the Philippine Creative Industries Development Council. It’s a testament to the growing recognition of Filipino creativity and artistry.

The “Malikhaing Pinoy” program is a national initiative designed to champion the Philippines’ vibrant creative industries, fueled by legislation aimed at nurturing talent, protecting cultural heritage, and empowering local artisans and entrepreneurs.

Laurel isn’t traveling alone. He’s leading a collective of exceptional Filipino designers – Arnel Papa, Celestina Maristela Ocampo, Cholo Ayuyao, Monchét Diokno Olives, and Maxine Santos Tuaño of MX Studios – who will showcase their accessories alongside his stunning clothing creations.

A recent preview in Manila House offered a glimpse into the collection, revealing pieces imbued with the spirit of Philippine culture. Each design carries a name that whispers stories of the islands and its people.

“The Mestiza” reimagines a classic ensemble, blending the elegance of Iloilo’s woven jusi with the raw beauty of Abra’s silk and abaca. Delicate black silk blooms, crafted with coq feathers in Pampanga, add a touch of regal artistry.

Inspired by the vibrant celebrations of Mindanao, “Kadayawan” features a bodice of hand-woven straw from Sorsogon paired with cropped culottes created using a unique technique reminiscent of a traditional nipa hut, woven in Ilocos.

“Datu,” honoring the pre-Hispanic chieftains, draws inspiration from the T’boli tribe, combining paper silk with ramie linen trousers and a traditional malong. A woven tampipi from Benguet and a striking bead tassel from Dumaguete complete the look.

Modern interpretations of the iconic barong Tagalog, “Manileña” and “Bagong Barong,” are crafted in jusi and styled with silhouettes inspired by the Filipino farmer, accented with jute bibs.

The collection is enriched by intricate details – handmade stampitas by Ayuyao and delicate lanyard abaniko (hand fans) by Olives of Casa Mercedes, each a miniature work of art.

Paying homage to the legendary weaver Narda Capunan, another ensemble captures the earthy hues and storytelling traditions of the Mountain Province, paired with a stunning crocodile bag by Masbate-born Ocampo.

Finally, “Paradiso,” a collaboration with Arnel Papa, celebrates the natural beauty of Palawan, incorporating exquisite shells from Bacolod with an oversized raffia straw clutch.

“Who is the Filipino?” Laurel asks. “This is the question I explore in this collection. Fashion is my medium to understand our heritage, identity, and culture – through materials, interactions, and the stories that connect us to the past and inspire the future.”

He envisions the reaction in Thailand: “I want them to say, ‘Wow. I want to go to the Philippines.’ I want them to showcase a fresh, new identity of what it means to be a modern Filipino.”

Laurel believes the connection between the two countries is strong, yet distinct. He aims to present a vision of the Philippines that is both familiar and strikingly original, a testament to the beauty and resilience of its people.

With the recent celebration of The Rajo Store’s 10th anniversary, Laurel is looking towards expansion, planning a revamp of his flagship store and the opening of two new branches. This Thai partnership marks a significant step towards regional growth, with further collaborations and pop-up opportunities on the horizon.

For Laurel, this is more than just a fashion show; it’s a declaration. “This is the Filipino today,” he states with conviction, “and we’re beautiful.”
