A sweeping enforcement effort across Florida has resulted in over 10,400 arrests of individuals identified as being in the country without legal authorization since April of last year. The initiative, dubbed “Operation Tidal Wave,” represents a significant escalation in the state’s approach to immigration.
The announcement came during a press conference where officials highlighted the collaborative nature of the operation. It involved a partnership with federal law enforcement, described as the largest joint immigration enforcement operation in the history of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
This intensified focus on immigration enforcement is backed by substantial financial resources. The state is receiving tens of millions of dollars in additional funding, earmarked for both state and local law enforcement agencies.
A significant portion of the funding – $2.7 million – is dedicated to assisting local agencies with the transportation of those taken into custody. Another $7.3 million will provide essential equipment for nearly a thousand local officers.
At the state level, $1 million is allocated for transportation, while a much larger $27.5 million will be used to equip over 3,600 state officers. This influx of resources aims to bolster the capacity of law enforcement to carry out immigration-related duties.
Central to this expanded enforcement capability is the 287(g) program. This initiative empowers state and local officers to actively participate in immigration enforcement, effectively extending federal reach.
Florida currently leads the nation in 287(g) partnerships, boasting 325 agreements with ICE. This extensive network allows for a deeply integrated approach to identifying and detaining individuals without legal status.
Officials have issued stern warnings against any interference with or threats towards ICE agents operating within the state. The message is clear: any attempts to obstruct enforcement efforts will be met with swift and severe consequences.
The state’s leadership has explicitly drawn a contrast with other jurisdictions, asserting a firm commitment to upholding the law and protecting those involved in its enforcement. This stance signals a determined effort to reshape the landscape of immigration enforcement within Florida’s borders.
