PREMIER'S WAR ON WHISKEY: Crown Royal AXED From Ontario!

PREMIER'S WAR ON WHISKEY: Crown Royal AXED From Ontario!

A century of tradition hangs in the balance, a legacy built on the skilled hands of dedicated workers in Amherstburg, Ontario. For generations, they’ve meticulously blended Crown Royal Canadian whisky, a spirit synonymous with Canada itself. Now, that heritage faces a chilling end as its parent company, Diageo, prepares to shutter the plant, sacrificing 200 jobs in the name of cost savings.

But this isn’t simply a business decision; it’s a calculated risk with potentially devastating consequences. Diageo seems to have overlooked a critical detail: the loyalty of its customers. The LCBO, Diageo’s largest customer, and the people of Ontario cherish their Canadian whisky. Removing it from shelves could translate to losses reaching tens of millions of dollars.

Premier Doug Ford didn’t hesitate to voice his outrage. He pleaded with the company, offering assistance, but his efforts were met with stubborn resistance. He warned Diageo, with a forcefulness that resonated far beyond the boardroom: “If you hurt my people, I hurt you.” A promise he intends to keep.

Despite the impending closure, the remaining workers continue their craft with unwavering professionalism and pride. Even facing the final weeks before the doors are locked, they pour their dedication into every bottle. Doug Benekritis, a 25-year employee and shop steward, describes a “surreal and somber atmosphere,” yet one still filled with a commitment to quality.

Ford has vowed to remove Crown Royal from LCBO shelves, a bold move to defend Ontario’s workers. It’s a stand against what he calls a “dumb decision” and a demonstration that sometimes, confronting a powerful bully is the only path forward. The premier’s resolve hasn’t wavered, and neither has his commitment to protecting Canadian jobs.

The implications extend beyond Amherstburg. Workers fear that Valleyfield, Quebec, could be next, losing its buffer against Diageo’s relentless pursuit of cost-cutting. The company’s sights are set on shifting production to the United States, specifically Alabama and Illinois, raising questions about what truly defines “Canadian whisky.”

Once Canadian water is no longer part of the process, the very essence of the spirit is altered. It becomes something… different. And in Ontario, it will become unavailable, a symbolic rejection of a company that disregarded its loyal workforce and the community that supported it for a century.

The workers themselves are resolute. Benekritis, like many of his colleagues, declares he won’t be purchasing Crown Royal after February – not just because it won’t be available, but on principle. Their pride and loyalty are unwavering, even in the face of adversity.

The LCBO’s previous boycott of American products already demonstrated the power of consumer action. Diageo may soon discover that underestimating the impact of this decision was a costly mistake, a lesson learned at the expense of its reputation and its bottom line.

This isn’t just about whisky; it’s about standing up for what’s right, protecting Canadian jobs, and honoring a century of dedication. It’s a story of loyalty, betrayal, and the unwavering spirit of a community refusing to be ignored.
