A significant deployment of federal agents is underway in Minnesota, concentrating resources in Minneapolis. Hundreds of personnel from the Department of Homeland Security have already arrived, with the potential for nearly 2,000 agents and officers to participate in a month-long operation.
This surge represents one of the largest concentrations of DHS resources ever focused on a single American city. The operation draws from both Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations and Homeland Security Investigations, the agency tasked with investigating transnational crime and large-scale fraud.
The initiative builds upon previous efforts, including Operation Metro Surge, which targeted individuals with existing deportation orders. That earlier campaign resulted in nearly 700 arrests by mid-December, signaling an intensified focus on immigration enforcement within the state.
Beyond immigration, the operation is directly responding to a growing scandal surrounding widespread fraud within Minnesota. Prosecutors have been investigating cases involving federally funded programs – nutrition, housing, and childcare – since 2021, alleging billions of dollars in losses.
To date, over 90 individuals have been charged, with more than 60 convictions secured. The investigation centers on alleged fraudulent activity primarily linked to the state’s Somali community, prompting a heightened level of scrutiny and federal intervention.
Gregory Bovino, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commander with a history of overseeing controversial immigration operations in other major cities, is arriving to coordinate the enforcement efforts. His involvement underscores the seriousness and scale of the operation.
While DHS has yet to issue a public statement regarding the specifics of the operation, the sheer number of agents deployed and the focus on both immigration and fraud suggest a comprehensive and determined effort to address perceived issues within the state.
