Representative Karen Bennett was indicted by a federal grand jury this week, adding to a growing scandal that’s shaking the foundations of trust in the state’s political landscape.
The charges center around alleged misuse of COVID-19 unemployment benefits. Prosecutors claim Bennett fraudulently obtained funds intended for those financially devastated by the pandemic, despite evidence suggesting her business continued operating throughout much of the crisis.
Bennett, known for her vocal support of movements like Black Lives Matter and calls to defund the police, stands accused of one count of making false statements. The indictment alleges she misrepresented her financial situation to qualify for the assistance, a betrayal of public trust.
The core of the case revolves around Bennett’s company, Metro Therapy Providers, an in-home physical therapy service. While she claimed the business was unable to function during the pandemic, investigators discovered it remained open for a significant period, generating income.
Further complicating the matter, Bennett reportedly failed to disclose all sources of income on her application. Beyond her earnings from Metro Therapy and her legislative salary, she allegedly omitted income from employment with a local church, receiving over $900 per week.
The amount of benefits Bennett allegedly obtained through these misrepresentations totals $13,940. She was released on a $10,000 bond, pending further legal proceedings, and now faces the prospect of a lengthy and damaging legal battle.
This isn’t an isolated incident. Just last month, another Georgia Democrat state legislator, Sharon Henderson, was arrested and charged with similar offenses – defrauding the federal government through pandemic unemployment fraud.
Henderson’s indictment included two counts of theft of government funds and ten counts of making false statements, painting a disturbing picture of potential widespread abuse of the system. The unfolding investigations raise serious questions about oversight and accountability within the Georgia state government.
