Senator Rand Paul voiced sharp criticism of President Trump, suggesting the president’s recent foreign policy decisions are heavily influenced by Senator Lindsey Graham. The remarks, captured in audio and widely circulated, reveal Paul’s disillusionment with a president he once believed would steer clear of foreign entanglements.
Paul recalled conversations with the Trump family following the 2016 presidential debate, where they expressed appreciation for his stance against unnecessary wars. He specifically remembered a shared aversion to the interventionist policies of previous administrations, particularly those of the Bush presidents.
“It was something I liked about Donald Trump,” Paul stated, acknowledging that this belief often tempered his concerns about other aspects of the president’s actions. He had considered Trump a significant departure from the “war mad” policies he so strongly opposed, a sentiment that now appears to be fading.
The senator specifically took issue with the attempt to unilaterally remove Nicolás Maduro from power in Venezuela, characterizing the move as a display of “disdain” for constitutional processes. This action, he believes, represents a troubling shift in Trump’s approach to international affairs.
Paul directly attributed this change to the influence of Senator Graham, a long-time advocate for a more assertive foreign policy. He pointed to numerous past statements by Trump himself, explicitly rejecting the idea of regime change, yet now seemingly embracing it.
“Somehow they’ve convinced him it’s different if it’s in our hemisphere,” Paul remarked, expressing disbelief at the apparent reversal. He suggested Graham has successfully persuaded Trump that intervention in Venezuela is an exception to his previously stated principles.
In a wry observation, Paul jokingly proposed legislation limiting Graham’s access to the White House, suggesting he be restricted to meetings with lower-level staff and fewer opportunities for personal engagements with the president, like golf outings.
Recent images further illustrate the close relationship between Trump and Graham. A photograph surfaced showing the two together, with Trump sporting a cap proclaiming “MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN,” a visual symbol of Graham’s hawkish views and their apparent alignment.
