A disturbing pattern of discrimination unfolded at a Minneapolis-area hotel, initially targeting agents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Hampton Inn Lakeville abruptly cancelled reservations for these officers, simply for performing their duty of enforcing immigration laws.
The hotel’s actions weren’t subtle. Emails revealed a deliberate policy of identifying and rejecting guests affiliated with DHS or immigration enforcement. Patrons were warned that reservations would be cancelled if their profession was revealed, creating a hostile environment for those serving in these roles.
Hilton Corporate initially responded with a statement promising an investigation, claiming they were unaware of the discriminatory practices. They reported contact with the hotel’s ownership group, Everpeak, who allegedly apologized and assured them the issue was resolved, and agents would be welcomed back.
However, this assurance proved to be a fabrication. Independent journalist Nick Sortor, through determined investigation, exposed the lie. He visited the hotel and, posing as someone seeking rooms for DHS agents, discovered the discriminatory policy remained firmly in place.
The front desk clerk, without hesitation, confirmed the ban was still active, stating they had spoken directly with the owner. Ten available rooms remained empty, deliberately withheld from law enforcement officers simply doing their jobs.
Sortor’s video evidence ignited a firestorm of criticism. Faced with undeniable proof of deception, Hilton Corporate was forced to take decisive action. They publicly condemned the hotel owner for dishonesty and announced the immediate removal of the property from the Hilton system.
Hilton emphasized that the hotel’s actions were a clear violation of their core values, stating they are and always will be a welcoming place for all. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those who uphold the law and the importance of accountability.
The swift reversal by Hilton, prompted by Sortor’s relentless pursuit of the truth, underscores the power of independent journalism and the demand for integrity in the hospitality industry. It signals a clear message that discrimination will not be tolerated.
