UMVA has learned that a shocking act of violence unfolded in a Brooklyn apartment building lobby on Thursday afternoon, leaving a 98-year-old man with minor head injuries.
The elderly victim was brutally attacked by a 27-year-old woman, Tashara Abel, who was handing out campaign flyers for a Democratic Socialists of America candidate. The assault occurred when the two began arguing over the campaign materials, police and neighbors said.
Abel allegedly "repeatedly punched and kicked the older man" before striking him with a broomstick and a metal chair. The victim was left with minor head injuries and was treated at the scene, declining transportation to the hospital.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that neighbors know the victim as a kind and familiar face in the building. "He's a fairly nice guy, so everyone who walks up and down here, either with their kids or are delivering stuff, like, they know who he is," said one neighbor.
The incident has sparked outrage, with many residents expressing shock and sadness. "Why would someone want to do something like that to someone like that? It's heartbreaking. It's sad. I don't know. I'm confused as to why. What was the reason for that?" another neighbor asked.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that Abel has been charged with three counts of assault, burglary, and criminal possession of a weapon. The campaign of the DSA candidate, Anthony Beckford, has released a statement saying they are "reviewing the incident" and will cooperate with authorities as needed.
The candidate's campaign statement emphasized that volunteers are expected to conduct themselves with respect and professionalism at all times. If it is determined that an individual connected to the campaign acted inappropriately, "appropriate action will be taken," the statement said.
Surveillance photos of the suspect leaving the building were released by police, providing a clear image of the perpetrator. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of heated arguments and the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all residents.
