BOSE ABANDONS OWNERS: SoundTouch Speakers Left to ROT?!

BOSE ABANDONS OWNERS: SoundTouch Speakers Left to ROT?!

A rare victory for consumers is unfolding in the world of smart home technology. Bose, a well-known name in audio, initially planned to render its decade-old SoundTouch speakers functionally obsolete by cutting off their cloud connectivity.

The original decision meant owners of speakers costing hundreds, even thousands, of dollars would lose access to streaming services like Spotify and Pandora through the SoundTouch app. These “smart” speakers were facing a swift descent into becoming expensive, limited Bluetooth devices.

Outrage from loyal customers was swift and vocal. Faced with a chorus of disapproval, Bose has reversed course, demonstrating a willingness to listen that’s increasingly uncommon in the tech industry.

While direct access to some music streaming services will still be removed – the deadline extended to May 6 – core local networking features will remain operational. This includes crucial functionality like Spotify Connect and AirPlay, allowing for multi-room audio experiences.

More significantly, Bose is opening up the SoundTouch technology to independent developers. This unprecedented move allows for the creation of new apps and potentially breathes new life into a product line slated for limited support.

The SoundTouch app itself won’t be abandoned. Users will still be able to control local features, manage speaker groupings, and adjust settings, ensuring a degree of continued usability.

This situation echoes similar battles fought by consumers when companies discontinue support for older devices. The recent outcry over Google’s decision to abandon older Nest thermostats highlighted the frustration of seeing expensive hardware become useless.

Unlike Google, which has remained firm in its decision, Bose has chosen a different path. By releasing the SoundTouch API, they’ve empowered a community to potentially extend the lifespan and functionality of these products.

It’s a refreshing change to see a major manufacturer prioritize customer satisfaction and innovation over planned obsolescence, offering a glimmer of hope for the future of tech ownership.
