A chilling surge in attacks against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents has unfolded over the past year, culminating in a recent shooting in Minneapolis. Federal data reveals a staggering 3,200% increase in vehicular assaults targeting law enforcement officials, painting a disturbing picture of escalating danger.
The statistics aren’t limited to vehicle attacks. Authorities have also documented a more than 1,300% rise in physical assaults and an astonishing 8,000% increase in death threats directed at ICE personnel. These numbers suggest Wednesday’s incident was not an isolated event, but rather a symptom of a broader, intensifying trend.
Since January 21st, ICE officers have faced 66 car attacks, a dramatic leap from the mere two reported during the same period last year. This escalation represents a 3,200% increase, highlighting the growing willingness of individuals to weaponize vehicles against those enforcing the law.
The increase in violence extends beyond vehicular assaults. During the first year of the current administration, DHS officials recorded 275 assaults on ICE officers, a stark contrast to the 19 assaults reported during the same timeframe the previous year. This represents a 1,347% increase in attacks.
Specific incidents underscore the severity of the situation. In December, a Venezuelan national, suspected of ties to the Tren de Aragua gang, deliberately rammed a law enforcement vehicle into a tree. Similar incidents occurred during Operation Midway Blitz in Chicago, where two individuals attempted to injure officers with their vehicles.
In Florida, an ICE agent suffered a leg injury when a Guatemalan national reversed his car, nearly crushing the officer. These are not isolated cases of accidental contact, but deliberate acts of aggression against law enforcement.
Federal officials attribute the surge in violence to what they describe as “radical rhetoric” from leaders of sanctuary cities. Following the Minneapolis shooting, the city’s mayor publicly called for ICE to leave, a statement officials claim contributes to a hostile environment.
The message from federal leadership is firm: these attacks will not deter the enforcement of the law. Anyone who targets a law enforcement officer will face the full force of prosecution, officials have stated, vowing to continue arresting individuals deemed to be dangerous criminals.
