These drives, built on the incredibly efficient Non-Volatile Memory Express protocol, communicate directly with your computer’s processor, bypassing older, slower methods. But until recently, Windows itself held them back.

NVMe SSDs are designed to outperform traditional SATA drives, offering significantly faster data access. However, Windows lacked a dedicated, native driver to truly unleash their power. That changed with the release of Native NVMe for Windows Server 2025, and subsequently, Windows 11 – but accessing this boost isn’t automatic.

Microsoft has quietly introduced a way to unlock the full capabilities of your NVMe drive, promising substantial improvements in speed and efficiency. This isn’t just about faster boot times; it’s about a fundamental shift in how your computer interacts with storage, potentially impacting everything from demanding games to complex applications.

The benefits are compelling: dramatically increased Input/Output Operations Per Second (IOPS), meaning your drive can handle far more tasks simultaneously. Expect lower latency, translating to quicker response times, and a significant reduction in CPU overhead, freeing up processing power for what matters most. Advanced NVMe features, like multi-queue support, are also now fully accessible.

Early tests suggest sequential speeds could jump by as much as 500 MB/s, and IOPS can increase by a remarkable 80 percent. Perhaps even more impactful is the potential for up to 45 percent CPU savings. These gains, while varying based on your specific hardware, represent a tangible performance upgrade for compatible systems.

However, proceed with caution. Reports indicate potential compatibility issues with certain SSDs. Some users have experienced drive recognition problems in disk management tools, with drives disappearing or appearing duplicated after enabling the new driver. These are not universal issues, but they are important to consider.

Furthermore, a small number of users have reported increased CPU usage and lag, particularly in games utilizing DirectStorage technology. This suggests a potential conflict that requires further investigation, highlighting the need for careful testing before committing to the change.

Before you begin, verify your drive is using the StorNVMe.sys driver in Device Manager. This is crucial; without it, activating the feature will have no effect. If you have a compatible drive, you can unlock the performance boost through either the Windows Registry or PowerShell.

To activate via the Registry, open Registry Editor (using Windows key + R, then type “regedit”). Navigate to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Policies\Microsoft\FeatureManagement\Overrides. Create three new REG_DWORD values – 156965516, 1853569164, and 735209102 – each set to a hexadecimal value of “1”. Restart your computer.

Alternatively, use PowerShell (with administrator privileges) and enter these commands: reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Policies\Microsoft\FeatureManagement\Overrides /v 156965516 /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f, reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Policies\Microsoft\FeatureManagement\Overrides /v 1853569164 /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f, and reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Policies\Microsoft\FeatureManagement\Overrides /v 735209102 /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f. A restart is required after running these commands.

Originally intended for Windows Server, this feature is now available to Windows 11 users, offering a potential performance edge. However, remember that compatibility isn’t guaranteed. If you encounter issues, simply remove the Registry entries or PowerShell commands and restart your computer to revert to the previous state.

This is a powerful, yet experimental, feature. While the potential rewards are significant, a cautious approach is recommended. Monitor your system closely after activation, and be prepared to revert the changes if you experience any instability or performance regressions.
