ICE FACES TOTAL WAR: Progressives Prepare to SHUT IT DOWN!

A quiet battle is brewing within the halls of Congress, one that connects a tragic shooting in Minnesota, the controversial actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and even U.S. involvement in Venezuela. At the heart of this conflict lies the fundamental power of the purse – Congress’s ability to control federal spending – and a growing divide among Democrats on how to wield it.

Progressive lawmakers are urgently calling for a dramatic shift in strategy, demanding that upcoming government funding bills be used to significantly curtail ICE’s power, potentially even defunding the agency altogether. The recent shooting involving ICE agents has ignited this push, with some Democrats willing to risk a government shutdown to force the issue.

The stakes extend beyond domestic policy. Several Democrats are also eyeing the funding process as a means to restrict the administration’s actions in Venezuela and to potentially limit future operations in Cuba, Mexico, Colombia, and even Greenland. This represents a bold attempt to reassert congressional authority over foreign policy.

Currently, funding for nine key sections of the federal government is set to expire on January 30th, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE. While the House recently passed a spending package covering some areas, a larger, more contentious debate looms over the remaining appropriations.

Adding fuel to the fire, a growing number of Democrats are publicly calling for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, further escalating tensions and complicating the funding negotiations. The situation is a complex web of political maneuvering and deeply held convictions.

A short-term solution – a continuing resolution (CR) – is likely to be considered, simply extending current funding levels and avoiding an immediate shutdown. However, this would only postpone the inevitable showdown over ICE and other contentious issues. Progressives see this deadline as critical leverage.

Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland articulated this strategy, stating the need to “use every means at our disposal,” including the appropriations process, to achieve their goals. But this approach faces significant resistance from within the Democratic Party itself.

House and Senate Democratic leadership are hesitant to push for a shutdown, recognizing the fragility of any potential agreement as the January 30th deadline approaches. When directly questioned about using appropriations to limit ICE, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries offered a curt dismissal, emphasizing his focus on “making life better for the American people.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer acknowledged “problems” with ICE but sidestepped questions about using the funding process to address them. This reluctance highlights the internal divisions and the political risks associated with a hardline stance.

Even Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent progressive voice, offered a degree of understanding towards Jeffries and Schumer, acknowledging the challenges of leading a diverse caucus. However, she underscored the rapid increase in ICE funding and the resulting “abuse of power.”

Ocasio-Cortez suggested that while immediate action may be difficult, Democrats could revisit the issue of ICE funding in future rounds of appropriations. The debate underscores a fundamental question: how far are Democrats willing to go to reshape the power and scope of ICE and assert congressional control over executive actions?
