The turquoise waters of St. Croix held a terrifying secret Thursday afternoon. A Minnesota woman, enjoying a peaceful day at Dorcsh Beach, became the victim of a brutal shark attack, a tragedy that unfolded with shocking speed.
Emergency calls flooded the 911 center around 4:28 p.m., reporting a woman severely injured in the water. Marine units, firefighters, and paramedics raced to the scene, responding to the desperate pleas for help echoing from the shoreline.
The scene that greeted first responders was horrific. The woman, later identified as 56-year-old Arlene Lillis, had lost her arm in the attack. Despite their frantic efforts, she succumbed to her injuries, a life extinguished in a moment of unimaginable terror.
Initial reports sparked fears of a second victim, prompting an extensive search of the beach perimeter. St. Croix Rescue teams meticulously scanned the area, but thankfully, no other injuries were discovered.
