MAHARLIKA'S MAKEOVER: Massive Transformation BEGINS NOW!

MAHARLIKA'S MAKEOVER: Massive Transformation BEGINS NOW!

A sweeping overhaul of the Philippines’ longest highway, the Maharlika, is poised to begin this year. This ambitious project, estimated at a minimum of 16 billion pesos, marks the first major rehabilitation of the vital roadway since its original construction.

The Maharlika Highway, formerly known as the Pan-Philippine Highway, is more than just a road; it’s a national artery. Stretching from the northernmost reaches of Ilocos Norte, through the heart of the Visayas, and down to Zamboanga City in Mindanao, it physically connects the nation’s major islands.

Public Works and Highways Secretary Vivencio Dizon emphasized the urgent need for this upgrade. Years of heavy use without significant maintenance have taken their toll, demanding immediate and comprehensive action.

Beyond the Maharlika, a broader infrastructure initiative is underway. Six additional key routes are slated for rehabilitation, including the heavily-trafficked C5 road in Metro Manila, and crucial bridges in Cebu, Iloilo, and Misamis Occidental.

The C5 project, vital for freight transport, will focus on reinforcing a road network particularly susceptible to damage. Design work is already advanced, with construction expected to begin within the first quarter of the year.

Ongoing work on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) is also nearing completion, with a target date of May 31st. The Department is working diligently to meet this deadline, recognizing EDSA’s critical role in the capital’s transportation network.

These infrastructure improvements are coupled with a commitment to transparency. The Department is expanding its online portal to provide publicly accessible, machine-readable data on all projects, fostering accountability and public trust.

This push for transparency extends to internal accountability as well. Recent investigations into alleged irregularities have already led to the relief of eight regional and district officials, and a significant reshuffling of leadership positions.

The Department has also appointed Ricardo P. Bernabe III as its spokesperson for all legal matters, streamlining communication and ensuring consistent messaging. He will leverage his experience overseeing information management and stakeholder relations.

These combined efforts – large-scale infrastructure projects and a renewed focus on transparency and accountability – signal a determined effort to modernize the Philippines’ transportation network and build a more resilient future.
