PIG FLU PANIC: ASF SPREAD EXPLODES!

PIG FLU PANIC: ASF SPREAD EXPLODES!

A chilling wave swept across the Philippine countryside in the final weeks of December, as the relentless march of African Swine Fever (ASF) intensified. Reports confirmed a significant surge in active cases, signaling a growing threat to the nation’s hog industry and the livelihoods it supports.

By December 31st, the Bureau of Animal Industry documented active ASF outbreaks in eleven provinces, spanning nine regions. These affected areas – Benguet, La Union, Aurora, Quezon, Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, Camarines Norte, Bohol, Eastern Samar, and Agusan del Sur – represent a stark increase from the seven provinces impacted just a month prior.

The geographical spread is equally alarming. The number of barangays grappling with active ASF cases nearly tripled, jumping from 31 in late November to 91 by year’s end. A staggering 57 of these infected barangays are located within the province of Bohol, highlighting a particularly severe concentration of the disease.

ASF is no ordinary animal illness; it’s a highly contagious and often fatal viral disease that decimates swine populations, including wild boars. Its continued presence poses a serious challenge to both local farmers and the global pork market, disrupting supply chains and driving up prices.

In response to the crisis, authorities are planning a large-scale repopulation program aimed at rebuilding the country’s decimated hog herd. The ambitious initiative intends to distribute over 230,000 breeder sows by 2028, starting with 32,000 in 2026 and scaling up to 100,000 annually for the following two years.

Alongside repopulation efforts, a vaccination campaign is underway. As of December, approximately 260,000 ASF vaccines had been administered, representing a significant step towards bolstering herd immunity from a planned total of 500,000 doses.

The scale of the devastation is undeniable. Since the initial ASF outbreak in 2019, the national swine population has plummeted from a robust 13 million to a concerning 8 million head. This dramatic decline underscores the urgent need for sustained and effective intervention to safeguard the future of the Philippine hog industry.
