EALA ERUPTS: Tennis World SHOCKED by Stunning Rise Before Australian Open!

EALA ERUPTS: Tennis World SHOCKED by Stunning Rise Before Australian Open!

The new year exploded with promise for Alexandra “Alex” Eala, as she surged to a career-high No. 49 in the Women’s Tennis Association rankings. This remarkable leap forward sets the stage for her highly anticipated appearance at the Australian Open this week.

Eala climbed four positions from No. 53, accumulating 1,159 points largely thanks to a stunning semifinal run at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand. The 20-year-old Filipina had already tasted success, resetting her previous career-best ranking of No. 50 just last month, concluding a brilliant 2025 season.

“The past year reminded me how powerful love, support, and community can be,” Eala shared, reflecting on the forces driving her forward. She expressed excitement for the year ahead, filled with ambitious goals, cherished memories, and deeper connections with loved ones.

Eala began the year with 1,076 points and swiftly added 83 more during her impressive Auckland campaign. Her victories included triumphs over three players ranked within the Top 80, demonstrating her growing dominance on the court.

As the No. 4 seed, Eala showcased her skill by defeating Donna Vekic (No. 69), Petra Marcinko (No. 82), and Magda Linette (No. 52) in convincing fashion. These wins highlighted her ability to consistently overcome challenging opponents.

Her Auckland journey concluded with a hard-fought semifinal loss to China’s Wang Xinyu, 7-5, 5-7, 4-6. Wang Xinyu’s own success in the tournament, reaching the final, propelled her 14 spots up the rankings to No. 43.

Now, Eala shifts her focus to the exclusive Kooyong Classic in Melbourne, a prestigious exhibition tournament featuring a select group of invited players. This event provides valuable match practice before the intensity of the Australian Open.

The Kooyong Classic field includes familiar rival Donna Vekic, a decorated player with a Wimbledon semifinal and Olympic silver medal to her name. She will also face Priscilla Hon of Australia and veteran Daniela Hantuchova, a Grand Slam mixed doubles champion.

The Australian Open marks a significant milestone for Eala, representing her first appearance in a Grand Slam main draw. She has previously navigated qualifying rounds and even secured a junior doubles crown in 2020, but this is a new level of competition.

The Australian Open is the final Grand Slam she has yet to compete in at the main draw stage, having already made her mark at the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open – where she achieved a historic victory over world No. 15 Clara Tauson of Denmark.
