X IS FUELING A SEXUAL ABUSE CRISIS: Deepfakes Run Rampant!

A disturbing surge of sexually explicit deepfakes circulating on the platform X has ignited a fierce debate about online safety and the urgent need for government intervention. Advocacy groups dedicated to protecting women and children are sounding the alarm, warning of a rapidly escalating crisis fueled by unchecked artificial intelligence.

The Canadian Centre for Child Protection and the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund are jointly demanding the creation of a dedicated online regulator. This call echoes a proposal previously put forward by the government, aiming to establish oversight for the digital realm and hold platforms accountable for harmful content.

The current wave of abuse stems from the platform’s own chatbot, Grok, which has been exploited to generate and disseminate these deeply damaging and non-consensual images. The sheer volume of these deepfakes has sparked international outrage, highlighting the vulnerability of individuals to this insidious form of digital sexual assault.

This photograph taken on Jan. 13, 2025 in Toulouse shows screens displaying the logo of Grok, a generative artificial intelligence chatbot developed by xAI, the American company specializing in artificial intelligence and its founder South African businessman Elon Musk.

Despite growing pressure, Canada’s AI Minister has stated that a ban on X is not currently under consideration, a position that contrasts with potential actions being explored in the United Kingdom. This decision was publicly acknowledged and celebrated by the platform’s owner, raising further questions about the balance between free speech and online safety.

While the government has taken steps to criminalize the creation and distribution of non-consensual sexual deepfakes, advocates argue that this is simply not enough. They emphasize the necessity of proactive regulation to prevent the proliferation of this harmful technology and protect vulnerable individuals from its devastating consequences.

The situation forces a critical question: how far will the dark side of artificial intelligence extend before meaningful safeguards are implemented? The rapid advancement of AI technology demands immediate attention and a comprehensive strategy to mitigate the risks and protect fundamental rights in the digital age.
