A young man who survived a horrific tragedy has passed away. Sha Reh, a 19-year-old from Utah, died unexpectedly of natural causes at his aunt and uncle’s home on Sunday, leaving behind a community grappling with renewed sorrow.
Sha’s life was irrevocably altered in December 2024 when he was found with a gunshot wound to the head, the sole survivor of a murder-suicide that claimed the lives of his parents and siblings. His mother, Bu Meh, 38, and his siblings Boe Reh, 11, Kristina Ree, 8, and Nyay Meh, 2, were all lost that day.
Investigators determined that Sha’s father, Dae Reh, 42, was responsible for the deaths of his family before ending his own life. The unimaginable loss left Sha blind, yet he faced his future with remarkable courage.
Just a week before his death, Sha began classes at the University of Utah, determined to pursue his dreams despite the immense obstacles before him. He had spent the past year adapting and learning new skills at the School for the Deaf and Blind, supported by a loving network of friends and family.
In the months following the tragedy, Sha spoke of finding strength in his faith and likened learning Braille to the challenge of learning English when his family first immigrated to the United States from Myanmar. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to find happiness even amidst profound grief.
His family, while devastated by his passing, found solace in their belief that Sha has now been reunited with his loved ones. They described a sense of peace knowing he is now free from suffering and has “perfect vision of his and his family’s eternity.”
The family expressed deep appreciation for the first responders and medical examiner’s office who aided Sha, as well as the outpouring of support from the community. They remember him as a remarkable individual who embodied resilience and hope.
A fundraiser was established to help cover funeral and memorial expenses, reflecting the profound impact Sha had on those who knew him. It stands as a testament to a life marked by both unimaginable loss and unwavering spirit.
