DHS UNDER FIRE: Progressives DECLARE WAR Over $80 BILLION Betrayal!

DHS UNDER FIRE: Progressives DECLARE WAR Over $80 BILLION Betrayal!

A potential government shutdown looms, but a significant hurdle was cleared Wednesday evening as the House of Representatives passed an $80 billion spending package. This “minibus” bill combines funding for vital areas like national security and federal financial operations, representing a crucial step toward keeping the government functioning.

The vote wasn’t close, with overwhelming bipartisan support – 341 to 79 – signaling a desire to avoid the disruptions of a shutdown. However, beneath the surface of agreement, a fierce debate is brewing over the future of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its enforcement policies.

Progressive lawmakers are refusing to support DHS funding without substantial reforms to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This stance stems from the tragic shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen, by an ICE agent, an incident that has ignited a firestorm of conflicting narratives.

Republicans, including DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, maintain the agent acted in self-defense. Democrats, however, are demanding a full criminal investigation, highlighting a deep partisan divide over the circumstances surrounding Good’s death and the broader issue of ICE accountability.

Initially, DHS funding was intended to be included in this current package, but Chairman Tom Cole has expressed a desire to bundle it with other critical departments like Defense, Transportation, and Health and Human Services. This move is met with resistance from key Democrats who insist on a separate vote for DHS.

Representative Rosa DeLauro is adamant: DHS funding must stand alone. This demand is echoed by the Congressional Progressive Caucus, led by Representative Ilhan Omar, who vows to block any funding that doesn’t address what they call “militarized policing practices” and a lack of accountability within ICE.

Despite the looming conflict over DHS, the passed bill enjoys broad support as a product of bipartisan negotiation. It includes $850 million for a fund allowing the Secretary of State to respond to unforeseen global events, demonstrating a commitment to flexibility in foreign policy.

Both sides are claiming victories within the legislation. Republicans highlight cuts to programs they deem wasteful, while Democrats point to continued funding for international family planning and development assistance, as well as crucial security aid for allies like Israel and Taiwan.

The bill also allocates over $13 billion to the U.S. Treasury and includes provisions aimed at protecting First Amendment rights, a key concern for many Republicans. It also provides significant funding for the Executive Office of the President and the Federal Judiciary.

The Senate is expected to swiftly approve this package before a weeklong recess, signaling a shared aversion to another government shutdown. However, a short-term funding extension, known as a continuing resolution, may be necessary to allow time for resolving the contentious DHS funding debate.

While bipartisan talks continue, the DHS funding remains the biggest obstacle. Lawmakers acknowledge the difficulty of reaching an agreement, but the current atmosphere represents a significant improvement over the brinkmanship that characterized previous funding deadlines.

The Senate won’t be able to address the DHS issue until their return later this month, leaving the fate of full-year funding – and the avoidance of a shutdown – hanging in the balance.
