A chilling surge of violence is targeting the men and women who enforce America’s immigration laws. Across the nation, federal officers are facing an unprecedented wave of attacks, transforming routine duties into life-or-death situations.
The numbers are stark and deeply unsettling. Assaults against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers have skyrocketed in the past year. Vehicle-based assaults have seen an astonishing increase of over 3,200 percent, while death threats have exploded by a staggering 8,000 percent.
Just this year, over 100 incidents involving vehicles used as weapons against federal immigration officers have been reported. In Minneapolis, an ICE officer narrowly avoided being struck by a vehicle during an operation, a confrontation that tragically escalated to a fatal shooting when the suspect allegedly weaponized their car.
This wasn’t an isolated event. The same officer had previously been dragged by a car six months earlier, suffering injuries that required 33 stitches. Less than a day later, in Portland, Oregon, two individuals attempted to run down a Border Patrol agent, forcing the agent to respond with gunfire to protect themselves and others.
Investigations revealed both suspects had entered the country illegally and were released under current border policies. One had connections to the notorious Tren de Aragua gang, with a history of involvement in violent crimes. The other had a prior DUI and an outstanding deportation order that had never been carried out.
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials believe a sustained campaign of demonization against immigration enforcement is fueling this violence. Years of rhetoric from certain political factions and activist groups have created an environment where attacks on officers are becoming increasingly normalized and accepted.
Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin warned that criminals are now deliberately “weaponizing vehicles” against law enforcement. Despite the escalating danger, she affirmed that ICE and CBP personnel remain committed to removing dangerous individuals from American communities.
The trend extends beyond these high-profile incidents. CBP recorded 71 vehicular assaults by late last year, a 58 percent increase from the previous year. ICE saw a jump from just two vehicle attacks to 28 during the same period, and the rate has nearly tripled since then.
Recent cases reveal a disturbing pattern of coordinated attacks. In Maryland, an individual rammed an ICE vehicle and fled. In Illinois, multiple coordinated ramming attacks occurred in a single day, some involving gang members. Similar incidents have been reported in Florida, California, and other key enforcement areas.
In Los Angeles, a suspect accelerated a vehicle directly toward agents during an operation. Elsewhere, an ICE officer was dragged by a vehicle during a routine traffic stop. Despite the clear and present danger, enforcement actions continue, often facing intense political and legal challenges.
Adding to the concern, some suspects charged with assaulting federal officers have seen their charges dismissed or reduced, sending a troubling message to those who would target law enforcement. Sanctuary policies and lax enforcement of immigration laws are seen as emboldening criminals and hindering officers’ ability to uphold the law.
These officers are on the front lines, protecting national sovereignty, public safety, and the rule of law – often at immense personal risk. Many of those involved in these attacks had no legal right to be in the country and should have been removed long ago.
When law enforcement officers are actively hunted, threatened with death, and vilified by political leaders, the issue transcends immigration policy. It becomes a matter of national survival, demanding a resolute response and unwavering support for those who defend our borders and enforce our laws.
DHS has pledged to continue enforcing the law and protecting its officers, regardless of political pressure. The question now is whether the gravity of the situation will be fully acknowledged and addressed with the seriousness it deserves.
