A wave of fear gripped the north end of the city as a series of brazen robberies unfolded over just two weeks. A 24-year-old man now faces charges, accused of terrorizing local businesses with a dangerous weapon.
The first incident occurred just before the holidays, on December 23rd. A man walked into a store on Steeles Avenue East, calmly approached the counter, and presented a chilling demand – a note claiming he was armed with a knife and requesting cash. He vanished with an undisclosed amount of money, leaving employees shaken.
The pattern quickly repeated. Four days later, another store, this time near Pharmacy Avenue, was targeted. The suspect, now concealing his face with a mask, went behind the counter, brandishing a knife and threatening the employee. Again, cash was stolen, and the robber escaped.
The following day, December 28th, brought yet another alarm. A store near Weston Road became the target, the suspect again using the threat of a concealed knife to demand money from the cashier. The tactic proved successful, and he fled with the stolen funds.
On December 30th, a fourth robbery attempt occurred near Bathurst Street. This time, the suspect, masked as before, displayed a knife in his pocket, but ultimately left empty-handed after failing to secure any cash. The escalating boldness of the crimes heightened the community’s anxiety.
The final reported incident took place on January 7th, mirroring the previous attacks. A store on Steeles Avenue East was robbed, with the suspect again using the threat of a knife to intimidate employees and steal money. He even escalated the threat, flashing the weapon at a second employee who approached the scene.
Investigators from the Hold Up Squad meticulously pieced together the evidence, drawing connections between the five robberies. Detectives from multiple divisions joined the hunt, determined to bring the perpetrator to justice.
Their efforts culminated in an arrest on Thursday. A search warrant was executed, leading to the discovery of a knife believed to be the weapon used in the robberies, as well as clothing matching descriptions provided by witnesses.
Mohamed Ismail, of Toronto, now faces a multitude of charges, including robbery with an offensive weapon, disguise with intent, and assault with a weapon. The community breathes a collective sigh of relief as the suspect is now in custody.
Anyone with information related to these incidents is encouraged to contact authorities, offering a chance to further assist the investigation and ensure the safety of the neighborhood.
