A tense Sunday in Oshawa unfolded as police responded to a mental-health call, culminating in an officer-involved shooting that left both a police officer and a suspect seriously injured.
Durham Regional Police were initially dispatched to a residence on Cedar Street, responding to a request for assistance related to a mental-health crisis. Upon arrival, officers encountered a 27-year-old man reportedly armed with a knife, setting the stage for a rapidly escalating situation.
According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), an interaction ensued, and an officer discharged their firearm multiple times. Both the suspect and the officer were struck by the gunfire, immediately requiring urgent medical attention.
Both individuals were swiftly transported to hospital; the officer initially listed as being in critical condition, and the suspect with serious, though non-life-threatening, injuries. Thankfully, both are now reported to be in stable condition.
Investigators have clarified that the suspect did not appear to be armed with a firearm, focusing the investigation on the circumstances surrounding the use of the knife and the subsequent discharge of the officer’s weapon.
The SIU has taken the lead on the investigation, deploying five investigators and two forensic officers to meticulously reconstruct the events. They are actively seeking information from the public, urging anyone with relevant video or photographic evidence to come forward.
While the investigation is ongoing, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks faced by law enforcement officers while responding to calls for service, particularly those involving individuals in crisis.
Elsewhere on Sunday, York Regional Police investigated a shooting in Vaughan where masked suspects fired multiple shots at a parked vehicle, causing damage but thankfully resulting in no injuries.
In Toronto, a separate early morning fire in the Parkdale neighborhood left three people injured, with one man suffering life-threatening injuries. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause.
Authorities in Bradford also reported the arrest of a 39-year-old man in connection with a west-end assault, while investigations continue into a series of stabbings reported in the downtown core.
