FRASER'S BACK: Liberals in CHAOS as He Seizes Control—AGAIN!

A seasoned political figure is once again stepping into a familiar role. John Fraser, a Member of Provincial Parliament for Ottawa South, has been nominated to temporarily lead the Ontario Liberal Party, marking the third time he’s been called upon to steady the ship during a period of transition.

This appointment follows the recent resignation of Bonnie Crombie, who stepped down as the full-time leader after a challenging tenure. Crombie’s departure comes after she narrowly avoided a leadership review last September, signaling internal party divisions and a desire for new direction.

Fraser first filled the interim leadership position in both 2018 and 2022, following the departures of Kathleen Wynne and Steven Del Duca respectively. His repeated selection speaks to a level of trust and respect within the caucus, and a perceived ability to provide stability during uncertain times.

MPP John Fraser is shown in Windsor on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2025.

The confirmation of Fraser’s interim role will require a vote involving the caucus, riding association presidents, and the party’s executive council. A date for this crucial vote is yet to be determined, but the process is expected to unfold in the coming days.

Crombie’s three-year leadership saw the Liberals regain official party status, a significant achievement despite failing to secure a seat in the legislature for herself. She lost a closely contested election in Mississauga East—Cooksville by a mere 1,200 votes, highlighting the competitive landscape.

Despite gains in the last provincial election – adding five new representatives to Queen’s Park – the Liberals remain significantly behind the governing Progressive Conservatives and the Opposition New Democrats in terms of seat count. The party faces a considerable challenge in bridging this gap.

One potential contender, Karina Gould, a former federal leadership hopeful and cabinet minister, has decided not to pursue the provincial leadership. Gould concluded that her skills and influence are best utilized representing her constituents in Burlington at the federal level.

The full details of the upcoming leadership race are anticipated to be revealed by February 9th, setting the stage for a period of intense campaigning and internal debate as the Ontario Liberal Party seeks a permanent leader to chart its future course.
