Dem Senator Warner admits Biden 'screwed up' the border, but claims ICE now targeting noncriminals

Senator Mark Warner recently offered a stark assessment of the situation at the southern border, admitting the Biden administration made significant errors in securing it. His comments came during a televised interview, revealing a growing frustration with the current approach to immigration enforcement.

Warner’s remarks were prompted by a discussion regarding Virginia Representative Abigail Spanberger’s decision to halt state law enforcement cooperation with ICE in the apprehension of undocumented immigrants. He pointed to data revealing a troubling trend: a vast majority of those arrested by ICE in Virginia – a staggering 75% – have no criminal record.

This statistic directly contradicts the federal government’s repeated claims of focusing on the “worst of the worst” offenders. Warner emphasized the distinction between illegal entry and criminal activity, highlighting that many arrests target individuals simply seeking a better life or navigating the legal immigration process.

Acknowledging the current administration’s missteps, Warner stated plainly, “The Biden administration screwed up the border.” However, he also criticized the tactics employed during the Trump administration, describing instances of ICE agents aggressively pursuing individuals engaged in everyday activities.

He recounted disturbing reports of ICE agents apprehending parents while dropping off children at school and individuals on their way to work, even in cases where children were left unattended in vehicles. Warner stressed the need for collaboration between local law enforcement and ICE, but only with a focus on those who pose a genuine criminal threat.

The senator’s comments arrived amidst heightened tensions following a fatal shooting in Minneapolis involving an ICE agent. Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen, was shot by an agent who then reportedly used abusive language as her vehicle crashed.

The incident sparked outrage and accusations of murder, with Democrats and local residents demanding justice. While the Trump administration and Republican lawmakers defended the agent’s actions as justified, the shooting fueled concerns about the use of force and accountability within ICE.

Just days prior, another ICE agent shot an alleged undocumented immigrant in the leg during an arrest attempt. Homeland Security officials justified the shooting, claiming the agent feared for their life after the individual resisted arrest and allegedly assaulted them.

Warner also expressed concern over the overwhelming presence of ICE agents in Minneapolis, noting their numbers dwarfed those of the local police force. He voiced strong support for local law enforcement’s ability to target actual criminals, but questioned ICE’s tactics of arresting individuals who are actively pursuing legal pathways to residency.

He described instances of ICE agents waiting outside courthouses to apprehend individuals attending immigration hearings, effectively punishing those who are attempting to comply with the law. Warner argued that this approach undermines the integrity of the immigration system and erodes trust within communities.
