A remarkable celebration is poised to unfold, marking seven decades of a powerful alliance. In 2026, Japan and the Philippines will commemorate 70 years of diplomatic relations, and the festivities begin with a vibrant tribute: a captivating jazz tour titled “Harmony of Friendship.”
This concert series isn’t simply a performance; it’s the official launch of a year-long homage to the enduring partnership between the two nations. Expect an evening steeped in musical artistry, designed to resonate with the shared history and future aspirations of Japan and the Philippines.
Leading the charge is the Tokyo-Manila Jazz & Arts Festival Group, a dynamic ensemble helmed by the celebrated Filipino jazz vocalist, Charito. A prominent voice within Japan’s jazz community, Charito brings a unique perspective to this cross-cultural collaboration.
Joining them on stage will be the Philippines’ own AMP Big Band, a collective of highly skilled professional musicians. Together, these two forces promise a synergy of sound, blending Japanese precision with Filipino passion.
The journey begins on January 20th at the Proscenium Theater in Makati, followed by a performance on January 22nd at 7 p.m. within the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium at RCBC Plaza, also in Makati. The tour culminates on January 23rd with a final performance at the Social Hall of the Cebu Provincial Capitol.
Access to the opening night at the Proscenium and the Cebu Capitol performance will be by invitation only, creating an exclusive atmosphere for honored guests. However, music lovers can experience the magic firsthand at the RCBC Plaza concert, which is free and open to the public.
Beyond the stage, the celebration extends to the realm of education and cultural exchange. The Japan Foundation, Manila, and the Tokyo-Manila Jazz & Arts Festival Group will visit De La Salle University-Dasmariñas on January 21st.
There, they will host “CIFRA International,” an immersive workshop designed to inspire and connect with aspiring musicians. This event, in partnership with the Lasallian Pop Band, requires prior RSVP through the student group, offering a unique opportunity for hands-on learning.
