A wave of tragedy and deceit has struck the city, with police investigating two separate, fatal collisions and a sophisticated email fraud that has cost victims hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Just this Tuesday, a cyclist’s life was tragically cut short near Avenue Road and Elgin Avenue. The 39-year-old man was struck by a flatbed truck attempting a left turn into a loading dock, and despite swift transport to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Earlier this month, a single-vehicle crash on Highway 27 near Humber College Boulevard claimed the life of a 68-year-old man. A Dodge Caravan travelling northbound lost control, impacting the median, and despite efforts to save him, he died in hospital days later.
The devastation extends beyond the roadways. Authorities are unraveling a complex email fraud scheme targeting businesses across Ontario and British Columbia. Victims were tricked into altering banking information, resulting in a loss exceeding $437,000.
A collaborative investigation, involving Toronto Police, the OPP, and police services in Guelph and Abbotsford, B.C., led to the arrest of two suspects. Jean-Pierre Godeme, 32, of Toronto, faces charges of fraud and possession of illicit property.
Vignon Kikissagbe, 33, of Ottawa, is accused of fraud, money laundering, and related offences. The investigation continues as authorities seek to fully understand the scope of the fraud and recover stolen funds.
Police are urgently appealing to the public for assistance in both the collision investigations and the fraud case. Anyone with dashcam footage or information related to these incidents is encouraged to come forward.
