A shadow has deepened over the case of a Smithville woman’s death, as a man already accused of murder now faces a staggering array of additional charges. Joseph Villneff, 44, of West Lincoln, is now confronting 25 new accusations, revealing a disturbing pattern of alleged offenses.
The investigation began with a heartbreaking discovery in April of this year: the body of 62-year-old Cathy Prosje found in her Smithville home. Authorities quickly determined the death wasn’t random, focusing their attention on a potential motive and missing evidence.
Investigators immediately sought a specific item – Prosje’s Hewlett Packard Elite Book 840 G9 Notebook – believing it held crucial clues. The search extended to pawn shops and potential trade routes, a desperate attempt to recover a key piece of the puzzle.
Villneff was initially charged with first-degree murder in October, sending shockwaves through the community. The investigation took another turn in January when Prosje’s sister, Carolyn, was first accused of being an accessory to the murder, a charge that later escalated to first-degree murder herself in July.
A parallel investigation, led by the Internet Child Exploitation Unit, soon uncovered a horrifying second layer to the case. In June, Villneff was charged with possession of child pornography and voyeurism, hinting at a darker, hidden life.
The discovery of even more disturbing material in September triggered the latest wave of charges – a total of 25 new counts encompassing voyeurism, the creation of child sexual abuse material, and multiple allegations of sexual assault involving a minor. The scope of the alleged offenses is deeply unsettling.
Law enforcement officials state that this is not the end of the investigation. Detectives anticipate further charges as they continue to meticulously analyze evidence and uncover the full extent of Villneff’s alleged actions.
Authorities believe there may be other, unknown victims connected to this case.
