A surge in website traffic to the Department of Homeland Security signals a dramatic shift in activity surrounding border enforcement and immigration policies. The agency’s official site experienced a staggering 68.49% increase in visits last year, reaching 102 million pageviews from 67 million unique visitors.
Notably, a significant portion of this traffic focused on information regarding self-deportation, specifically through the CBP Home App. Launched last year, this mobile application allows individuals in the U.S. without legal status to initiate their own departure.
The department reports tens of thousands have already utilized the app, incentivized by a $1,000 stipend and financial assistance for travel back to their country of origin. This represents a core component of a broader strategy focused on reducing the undocumented population.
Alongside the app, DHS unveiled the “Worst of the Worst” website, a public-facing resource detailing the cases of individuals apprehended for serious crimes. This site highlights those with convictions or charges related to offenses like rape, murder, and child predation.
These developments coincide with reported historic declines in illegal immigration numbers. Nearly 3 million individuals are estimated to have left the U.S. in the past year, with 2.2 million choosing self-deportation and over 675,000 being formally deported.
U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions have reached their lowest levels in recorded history, falling below the average monthly figures seen in previous years. Simultaneously, authorities report a significant reduction in fentanyl trafficking across the southern border – cut by more than half.
The U.S. Coast Guard’s efforts have also yielded substantial results, seizing enough cocaine to potentially impact a vast number of lives. These successes, according to the agency, have translated into over $13.2 billion in taxpayer savings.
Looking forward, DHS plans to launch a redesigned website aimed at enhancing transparency and user experience. Additionally, changes to the H-1B visa program are being implemented, prioritizing applicants with higher skills and salaries.
