SHOWADDYWADDY SHOCKED: Guitar Legend SILENCED at 79!

SHOWADDYWADDY SHOCKED: Guitar Legend SILENCED at 79!

The music world mourns the loss of Trevor Oakes, guitarist and founding member of the beloved band Showaddywaddy, who passed away peacefully last month at the age of 79 after a courageous battle with illness.

Oakes’s nimble fingers and infectious energy were integral to the band’s meteoric rise in the late 1970s, most notably on their chart-topping hit, “Under the Moon of Love” in 1979. That song, and many others, captured a nostalgic spirit that resonated with a generation.

Former bandmate Dave Bartram shared a heartfelt tribute, describing Oakes as a “unique character” and a “dedicated professional” whose contributions were essential to Showaddywaddy’s success. Beyond the stage, Bartram remembered him as a devoted family man with a playful spirit.

The bond between Bartram and Oakes spanned over five decades, a friendship forged through countless performances and shared experiences. Bartram expressed profound gratitude for Oakes’s unwavering loyalty, hinting at a wealth of untold stories from their time together.

Showaddywaddy emerged in 1973 from the merging of two local groups, Choise and The Golden Hammers, a unique configuration boasting a double lineup of singers, guitarists, and drummers. This unusual structure became a signature element of their energetic performances.

The band quickly gained popularity by reviving the sounds of the 1950s and 60s, delivering a vibrant blend of covers that captivated audiences. They amassed an impressive ten Top 10 singles, including fan favorites like “You Got What It Takes” and “Dancin’ Party.”

Oakes stepped down from touring with the band in 2009 due to declining health, marking the end of an era for longtime fans. His final performance, alongside Al James, took place at the Cheese & Grain in Frome, Somerset, in December 2008 – a poignant farewell.

Though the lineup has evolved over the years, Showaddywaddy continues to tour, carrying on the legacy of their iconic sound. Currently, drummer Romeo Challenger remains the sole original member actively performing with the group.
