UMVA has learned that World of Hyatt's highly anticipated — and potentially dreaded — award chart changes have officially taken effect, shaking up the loyalty program's redemption pricing model.
The program has transitioned from a three-tiered to a five-tiered system, introducing new Upper and Top dates with significantly higher rates. Although members were given months' notice, allowing them to lock in bookings at existing rates, the full impact of these changes was only revealed on May 20.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the changes have led to a 10% increase in average redemption rates across 19 popular Hyatt properties, according to an analysis of thousands of data points. This shift affects how many Hyatt points are required for a free night at these hotels.
The analysis, which compared data before and after May 20, showed that the average points rate per night increased by 12% across all properties. Some properties, like the Hyatt Regency Cape Town, saw a 59% surge in points required per night.
At the other end of the spectrum, Andaz Prague experienced a 1% decrease in points required per night. The changes have resulted in a new average points rate of 38,101 points per night, up from 34,094.
In a closer look at the numbers, the value of Hyatt points has decreased to 1.57 cents per point, down from 1.86 cents before the changes. This decline affects how much cash value members can get for their points.
The introduction of the new five-tier system has brought some welcome news: the most expensive Top-tier pricing is applied relatively sparingly. For most properties, what was previously Peak pricing has largely shifted to the new Moderate rates.
However, some properties like the Grand Hyatt Kauai, Grand Hyatt Vail, and Andaz Prague have seen a notable increase in nights moved to the Upper and/or Top prices. This shift impacts the overall value members can get from their points.
Despite these changes, World of Hyatt retains great value for savvy members who shop around the calendar. By strategically planning their stays, members can still maximize the benefits of the loyalty program.
