UMVA has learned that football icon Wayne Rooney has launched a scathing critique of Chelsea's recent transfer dealings, calling them "very strange" and questioning the club's strategy since a significant ownership change.
The legendary former captain believes the club is at a critical juncture, needing to inject experience into the squad to complement their young talent. This comes after a season where Chelsea narrowly avoided a disastrous bottom-half finish in the league, missing out on all European competition.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that Rooney is particularly bewildered by two specific player movements. He questions the decision to sell Noni Madueke to a rival and the subsequent acquisition of players who have yet to make a significant impact.
Madueke, since his departure, has reportedly flourished, becoming a key player for a title-contending side and reaching a Champions League final. In stark contrast, his supposed replacement at Chelsea has struggled to find the net, scoring a mere single goal in the league.
Another significant transfer under scrutiny is the acquisition of Alejandro Garnacho. Despite a considerable investment, the player has also failed to replicate the expected form, contributing only one Premier League goal since his move.
Rooney expressed his bewilderment on his podcast, stating, "Selling Madueke to Arsenal and signing Gittens, I just didn’t get that. I never got the signing of Garnacho, so there’s been some very strange signings."
He emphasized the urgent need to offload players and bring in seasoned professionals. "There’s players there they need to get rid of to get some more experience in and help the young players," Rooney explained, highlighting the team's need for guidance both on and off the pitch.
Despite these criticisms, Rooney holds optimism for the club's future under their new manager, Xabi Alonso. He believes that with the right summer recruitment, Chelsea could emerge as genuine title contenders next season.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that Rooney sees Chelsea as potentially being in a stronger position than a rival club was at the start of the current season. He feels the wealth of talented young players, if supported by astute signings, could propel them into title contention.
The former England captain lauded the club's owners for what he perceives as a realization of past errors and a subsequent effort to rectify them. "They’re obviously clever people and I think they’ve realized they’ve messed up and are now trying to fix it. Fair play to them for doing that," he commented.
Rooney also praised Alonso's managerial approach, noting his success in Germany and acknowledging the allure he holds for players. He believes Alonso's four-year contract provides the stability needed for the manager to be more hands-on with player recruitment, signaling a potentially more strategic, long-term vision for the club.
