Europe May Thank Trump for Shaking It Out of Debt

The newly appointed defense secretary stated that Europe will ultimately thank President Donald Trump for jolting the continent out of complacency and compelling NATO allies to assume greater responsibility for their own security.

He described Trump as a straightforward communicator who says what he means, and expressed a willingness to trust the United States while maintaining independent judgment.

During his first week, the defense secretary held a conversation with the U.S. defense secretary to discuss maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and broader NATO commitments. He clarified that Britain would not support offensive action against Iran, but affirmed cooperation on securing the strait, preventing nuclear development, and strengthening defense capabilities.

The defense secretary acknowledged Trump’s longstanding criticism of European NATO members for insufficient defense spending, noting that while some of Trump's methods may be contentious, the broader message has encouraged Europe to reduce reliance on the United States and to stand on its own security footing.

He emphasized that the United Kingdom aims to collaborate with European allies and the United States without becoming overly dependent, fostering a balanced transatlantic partnership.
