UMVA has learned that a shocking plot to murder Jack Avery, a member of the boy band Why Don’t We, has been uncovered, and three individuals have been arrested in connection with the alleged murder-for-hire scheme.
The alleged plot, which involved a staged car crash, was orchestrated by Avery's ex-girlfriend, Gabriela Gonzalez, and her father, Francisco Javier Gonzalez. Gonzalez, a social media influencer with close to half a million followers on both TikTok and Instagram, was charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation of murder.
The plot follows a long-running custody and visitation battle between Avery and Gonzalez, who share a 7-year-old daughter. Avery's focus right now is on "being the best father I can be" to their daughter, Lavendar, who he says is "safe, healthy and deeply loved".
In a lengthy statement, Avery expressed his gratitude to his family, friends, law enforcement, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for their support. He also thanked those who have supported him and withheld judgment while the truth unfolded, adding, "Always seek the truth."
The Los Angeles County District Attorney, Nathan Hochman, described the case as "sinister", saying, "This is a case where the defendants are accused of going to great lengths to find someone to commit murder. Most fathers raise their children to respect the law, but here we have a dad who allegedly helped his daughter and her boyfriend break the law in the most sinister way imaginable."
Prosecutors claim that Gonzalez's father sent $10,000 as front money in the plot, and her boyfriend, Kai Cordrey, requested and received an additional $4,000. An undercover law enforcement officer posing as a hitman spoke with Cordrey about the murder-for-hire plan in September 2021.
If convicted, all three defendants face up to life in prison. Gonzalez is being held without bail, while her father was arrested in Florida and is due to appear in court on Tuesday, May 19.
The case highlights the darker side of celebrity life, with Avery and his family having endured "intense public scrutiny, false accusations, and deeply painful attacks on our character and reputation" over the years.
