The arrest of a Louisiana couple has shocked the nation after allegations of bestiality and child abuse surfaced. Phillip Babin, 28, and Hailey Mire, 34, are accused of engaging in twisted sex acts with the family dog and physically abusing their young daughter.
According to authorities, the investigation began in May after the couple's daughter was allegedly whipped in the face with a curtain rod, causing significant injuries. Babin was subsequently arrested and released on $50,000 bail. However, detectives continued their investigation and obtained a search warrant for the couple's home, where they discovered multiple digital devices containing evidence of the alleged abuse.
The devices reportedly contained a plethora of sickening videos of Mire and Babin engaging in sex acts with the family dog. As a result, Mire and Babin were taken into custody on June 17 and booked into the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex. Babin was charged with 36 counts of sexual abuse of an animal in addition to his initial charge of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile, with bail set at $360,000.
Mire, on the other hand, was charged with 47 counts of sexual abuse of an animal and obstruction of justice, with bail set at $520,000. The high bail amounts reflect the severity of the allegations against the couple.
The press release stresses that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, if convicted, Babin could face imprisonment at hard labor for up to 40 years for the second-degree cruelty to a juvenile charge. Mire, meanwhile, could face a felony charge carrying prison sentences ranging from one to 10 years of hard labor and fines of up to $25,000 for the bestiality charges.
A separate case in British Columbia has also made headlines, with a man accused of having sex with a horse. Seth Justin Christian was charged with one count of bestiality and has chosen to proceed with a judge-alone trial. The case has sparked outrage and raised questions about the prevalence of animal abuse.
The Louisiana couple's case is a stark reminder of the importance of reporting suspected child abuse and animal cruelty. As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: those accused of such heinous crimes will face severe consequences if convicted.
