The recent congressional primaries in New York have been marked by a surprise sweep of democratic socialists, who have left many in the state's political landscape reeling.
Three of these democratic socialists, backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, have emerged victorious in the primaries, with one of the most notable upsets being the loss of incumbent Democrat Rep. Dan Goldman.
Goldman, a nepo baby and former lead majority counsel in the first impeachment against President Trump in 2019, was trounced by former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander in the race for New York's 10th Congressional District.
Other wins by democratic socialists include state Assemblywoman Claire Valdez, who crushed Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, and former Mamdani campaign staffer Darializa Avila Chevalier, who upset five-term incumbent Democrat Rep. Adriano Espaillat, the leader of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
In response to the election results, President Trump has expressed concerns about the future of New York and other similarly situated states, warning that history shows that such states will only continue to decline.
Trump also had a sarcastic and savage response to Goldman, suggesting that the former congressman is lost and struggling to find his way among the many democratic socialists vying for power.
