Modular PC maker Framework has provided an update on its supply chain, offering some good news to customers who have been waiting for their new Framework Laptop 13 Pro. Due to manufacturing issues with the haptic touchpad and custom display, Framework has pushed out shipments until late July to early August.
However, Framework has also announced that it has sourced a new SSD from its partner ADATA, the XPG MARS 970, which offers better performance, efficiency, and long-term reliability at a substantially lower cost than the previous option.
The 1TB MARS 970 is actually priced lower than the 500GB SSD that Framework had originally included with the Laptop 13 Pro. As a result, customers who ordered the 500GB SSD will be automatically switched over to the larger 1TB SSD and pay less, as long as Framework's inventory holds out.
Framework is also warning customers that higher prices for laptop CPUs may be arriving soon, citing signals that CPU pricing will increase in the coming weeks. The company expects to adjust the overall system price on the Framework Laptop 13 Pro for new orders, but has not specified the exact amount of the price increase.
The uncertainty surrounding CPU pricing has led some to speculate about the potential impact on the industry. With silicon being rerouted toward enterprise chips and customers, this may be a bad sign of things to come. Framework has impressed with its transparency in recent updates, and customers will be waiting to see how the situation develops.
