The attack happened at San Pedro Square in the San Francisco Bay Area, a location that has attracted hundreds of fans to watch the football. At the time of the shooting on Sunday night, there were no game screenings at the popular San Jose spot.
The only World Cup match of the day had wrapped up at about 2pm local time, several hours before the shooting took place. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
This incident is being investigated as a homicide, with several surrounding streets closed in the area. The public is advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
