MINNEAPOLIS ERUPTS: Deadly Shooting, Troops Deployed!

A chilling scene unfolded in Minneapolis on a frigid Saturday, as a federal immigration officer fired a fatal shot, igniting immediate and widespread protests. The city, still reeling from a previous shooting just weeks prior, found itself once again at the epicenter of outrage and grief.

The victim, identified by his parents as 37-year-old Alex Pretti, a dedicated intensive care unit nurse, was killed during an operation conducted by federal officers. Details remained scarce in the immediate aftermath, but authorities confirmed the officer involved is an eight-year veteran of Border Patrol.

The Department of Homeland Security stated officers fired “defensive shots” after Pretti, allegedly armed with a handgun, approached them and “violently resisted” attempts to disarm him. However, bystander videos quickly surfaced, painting a different picture – showing Pretti holding a phone, with no immediately visible weapon.

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers stand guard as demonstrators gather near the site of where state and local authorities say a man was shot and killed by federal agents earlier in the morning in Minneapolis, Minn., on Jan. 24, 2026.

These videos reveal a tense confrontation escalating rapidly. Officers are seen shoving individuals, and a struggle ensues with Pretti surrounded by a growing number of agents. The footage captures a chaotic scene, culminating in a single gunshot, followed by multiple shots, and Pretti falling motionless to the ground.

The Minnesota National Guard was activated by Governor Tim Walz, deploying troops to both the shooting site and a nearby federal building already besieged by daily protests. The Arctic air, a biting -6 degrees Fahrenheit, did little to deter thousands who marched downtown, demanding an end to federal immigration enforcement in the state.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara appealed for calm, urging both the public and federal law enforcement to exercise “discipline, humanity and integrity.” He emphasized the need for accountability and a measured response to the escalating crisis.

The shooting occurred amidst ongoing demonstrations sparked by the January 7th death of Renee Good, killed when an ICE officer fired into her vehicle. The proximity of the two incidents – just over a mile apart – fueled the growing sense of fear and distrust within the community.

Protesters, braving the extreme cold, confronted federal officers with shouts of anger and frustration, chanting “ICE out now!” and accusing the agents of brutality. Some protesters attempted to block streets with garbage dumpsters, while officers responded with batons and flash bangs.

Governor Walz expressed a lack of confidence in federal officials, vowing that the state would lead the investigation into Pretti’s death. He also called on President Trump to halt the Department of Homeland Security’s largest-ever immigration enforcement operation, deeming it a dangerous escalation.

Witnesses described a scene of raw emotion and desperation. “They’re killing my neighbours!” exclaimed one Minneapolis resident, reflecting the deep-seated fear gripping the community. The city held its breath, bracing for what came next.

The incident has ignited a national conversation about the use of force by federal agents and the escalating tensions surrounding immigration enforcement. The search for truth and accountability continues, as Minneapolis struggles to heal and find a path forward.
