PIZZA POPS NIGHTMARE: Urgent Recall EXPANDS!

PIZZA POPS NIGHTMARE: Urgent Recall EXPANDS!

A widening health alert has been issued across Canada, prompting consumers to check their freezers for potentially contaminated Pizza Pops. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has significantly expanded its recall of the popular frozen snack, adding multiple varieties to the list of affected products.

The recall now encompasses three-cheese, pepperoni, pepperoni and bacon, deluxe, and 3-meat Pizza Pops, spanning a range of packaging sizes. The concern centers around possible contamination with E. coli O26, a particularly dangerous strain of bacteria.

This expansion focuses on products with best-before dates between June 8, 2026, and June 21, 2026. Consumers are strongly advised to discard any affected Pizza Pops immediately or return them to the store where they were purchased.

The initial recall, issued in December, followed a disturbing outbreak of E. coli illnesses linked to the snacks. Between early October and late November, 23 individuals across seven provinces became sick after consuming the frozen treats.

The impact of the outbreak has been severe, with five people requiring hospitalization in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland. Health officials are urging vigilance as symptoms can be deceptively mild at first.

E. coli O26 doesn’t always present with obvious signs of spoilage – the food may appear and smell normal despite being contaminated. Initial symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps, progressing to watery or bloody diarrhea.

However, the danger extends far beyond gastrointestinal distress. In severe cases, E. coli O26 can lead to seizures, strokes, the need for blood transfusions or kidney dialysis, and even permanent kidney damage. Tragically, the infection can be fatal.

The manufacturer, General Mills, has stated that food safety is their utmost priority and is actively collaborating with retailers to remove the potentially affected products from shelves. This is a proactive step to protect public health.

Authorities emphasize the importance of thoroughly checking freezers and disposing of any Pizza Pops matching the recalled descriptions and best-before dates. Protecting yourself and your family requires immediate action.
