COLUMBIA ERUPTS: Students Declare New Prez a FASCIST!

The incoming president of Columbia University, Jennifer Mnookin, is already confronting a storm of opposition. A vocal group is condemning her actions at a previous university, framing them as aggressive suppression of student dissent.

The criticism stems from events last May at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where Mnookin, as chancellor, authorized the dismantling of a pro-Palestinian encampment. Students affiliated with Students for Justice in Palestine and Wisconsin Young Democratic Socialists of America had established the encampment to demand divestment from Israel.

The response was swift and forceful. Police were deployed, resulting in the arrest of thirty-four individuals. While most were released with citations, the encampment was quickly rebuilt the following day, demonstrating the students’ unwavering resolve.

Mnookin’s appointment, effective July 1st, follows a period of turmoil at Columbia. The previous president, Minouche Shafik, resigned amidst widespread controversy surrounding anti-Israel protests and similar encampments on campus.

Columbia’s Board of Trustees expressed strong confidence in Mnookin’s ability to lead. They highlighted her experience navigating complex institutions, her commitment to open inquiry, and her capacity for decisive leadership.

They described her as a leader who actively listens and fosters consensus, yet isn’t afraid to make difficult choices. The board believes she embodies the university’s core values and will guide it forward with strength.

Mnookin herself expressed enthusiasm for the role, acknowledging the challenges facing higher education. She specifically noted the increased scrutiny universities are currently experiencing.

Her arrival also comes after Columbia reached a substantial settlement – exceeding $200 million – with the Trump administration. The agreement addressed allegations of discrimination against Jewish students on campus, with officials acknowledging a prior problem with antisemitism.

The situation underscores the intense pressures facing university leadership. Mnookin is stepping into a role defined by deeply held convictions and a highly charged atmosphere, where navigating complex issues will be paramount.

The incoming president’s past actions have already ignited debate, signaling a potentially contentious tenure as she attempts to balance academic freedom with institutional stability.
