EGLINTON CROSSTOWN: Launch DELAYED! Chaos Looms for Commuters!

EGLINTON CROSSTOWN: Launch DELAYED! Chaos Looms for Commuters!

After years of delays and setbacks, the Eglinton Crosstown LRT is nearing its anticipated launch, currently slated for February 8th. But the focus isn’t just on opening day; it’s on ensuring a smooth, reliable operation *after* the doors open to the public.

Ontario’s Transportation Minister expressed cautious optimism, highlighting the extensive testing already completed. Millions of miles have been logged, and lessons learned from the recently opened Finch West Line are being directly applied to the Eglinton project.

The Finch West Line has essentially served as a real-world proving ground, identifying potential issues before they impact the larger Eglinton system. Teams are collaborating closely with the TTC to refine protocols and address any challenges proactively.

Simultaneously, major construction is underway on the Bowmanville GO Transit extension, expanding the Lakeshore East line nearly 20 kilometers. This demonstrates a broader commitment to improving transit infrastructure across the region.

A key takeaway from Finch’s initial weeks of operation is the importance of preparedness for all conditions. Officials are meticulously reviewing procedures for snow removal and drainage, particularly along the sections of the Eglinton line that run at street level.

While both lines face similar operational hurdles, the Eglinton Crosstown benefits from a significant advantage: 11 kilometers of its route are underground. This shielding will minimize exposure to harsh winter weather and its associated complications.

Recent testing during December’s snowstorm revealed a promising sign – the Eglinton system achieved the highest average vehicle-kilometre ratio of any transit project in the city, indicating strong performance even under challenging circumstances.

The rollout of the Eglinton Crosstown will be gradual and deliberate, a phased approach designed to identify and address any emerging issues in real-time. This “vetting-in process” allows for continuous improvement and refinement.

Construction on the 19-kilometer, 25-stop line began in 2011, representing a massive undertaking with a price tag of nearly $13 billion. The original 2020 opening date was pushed back due to issues like improperly laid tracks and a testing collision.

The province is determined to learn from past mistakes and deliver a transit system that is both reliable and integral to the city’s future. Every day brings new insights and adjustments, all aimed at ensuring a successful launch and long-term operation.
