A treacherous stretch of the 401 west near Trenton ground to a halt Tuesday morning, gripped by a cascade of collisions. The highway became a scene of twisted metal and stranded vehicles between Glen Miller Road and Wallbridge Loyalist Road, forcing authorities to reroute traffic.

As the situation escalated, a warming centre sprang to life at the Trenton Arena, offering refuge to those caught in the icy grip of the storm. Located at 8 Couch Cres, it became a haven for drivers and passengers seeking shelter from the biting cold.

Buses were quickly dispatched to ferry stranded motorists to the arena, providing a vital lifeline in the worsening conditions. Initial reports indicated a staggering number of vehicles involved – an estimated fifty – scattered across the westbound lanes.

Authorities warned of a lengthy closure, acknowledging the extensive investigation and cleanup required to restore the highway. The sheer scale of the incidents demanded a thorough response, delaying the return to normal traffic flow.
